Week 12/13-12/16

Dear Parents,

We are excited for the Christmas season! Thank you so much for your gifts and care during this time. We have planned a Christmas party. It will be this Thursday afternoon for both classes. Students have asked to bring in many treats which is great. Mrs. McFarland will make a list of items that they are able to bring. We would ask that students sign up for the item they would like to bring and make sure to bring enough for both classes. Please feel free to reach out with any questions about this. In addition, students are going to make Christmas ornament in Mrs. McFarland class, please bring hot glue gun if you have one. We appreciate your help in celebrating the season.

English Class:

In English class the students are continuing their presentations on their countries. They really have been doing so great. It has been a joy to watch them.

For math they will have two quizzes this week. They have been studying measurement conversions and rates. It is a tough unit so please make sure students are reaching out for help.

Chinese Class:

If your student received the AAPPL test result the target for 6th grade: Interpretive Reading should be at range N4-I1 (N4 is a little bit below), Interpretive Listening should be at range I1-I2 (I1 is a little bit below), Presentational Writing should be at range N4-I1 (N4 is a little bit below).  If your student is below, don't worry just have them practice Quizlet and Mandarin Matrix each daily for 10-15 minutes and follow the AAPPL strategy suggestion to make improvement.

Note: If you student has missing assignment for Science and Chinese, they still can go back to complete their assignments, the window will open until the end of 2020.

Chinese :

This coming week, we will finish MMX U2.3 公园过夜。

Homework will post on Canvas Monday.

Week 12/7-12/10

Dear Parents,

Yeah:) Another safe and fun week passed.  Thank you for all your support.

English:

This week in English students started to present their country reports! They have done an awesome job so far and worked really hard. In math we are continuing our new unit on rates and percentages. The students seem to be doing well in this area.

Each class also earned a party in their classroom fund after months of hard work. They really have been doing well each week. Please continue to reach out with any questions.

Chinese:

This coming week we will finish to learning "成都的辣“ and then begin with "公园过夜“
Homework will be ‘成都的辣” nearpod. This will be posted on the Canvas and due the following Monday.

Science:

I have read student's  12/4 science assignment.  I really enjoyed all of them.  There also is a great event that the closest great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter will happen at December 21, 2020 which only happen in 397 years.  From our point of view, the two giant gas planet will appear only 0.1 degrees apart. This is just 1/5 of a full Moon diameter. Start today, I hope you and your student will have some hot cocoa outside and observe the great conjunction movement of Saturn and Jupiter.  Yesterday students should receive a science reading package from p1-21 on the planet science book: Structure and Motion within the Solar System.  This reading package has a lot fun information, so while observing the planets, drink hot cocoa and read the science.  What a perfect nights for the family.  I hope that you will all enjoy it.

Week 11/30-12/3

 Dear Parents,

We hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your family and wish you a wonderful rest of the day as well.

English:

In English the students had no homework. I hope they enjoyed a great time with family this week. Once they return we will begin a new math unit on rates and percentages. This is a great unit for real life application so feel free to ask them questions about it.

They will also begin presenting their PowerPoints at the end of this week currently they are working through notecards in class to prepare for their presentation.

Also after talking with Mrs. McFarland about tests in class we wanted to be clear about how we offer retakes for tests. We will be offering retakes for any test they may have failed on Fridays. If a student chooses not to come on Friday a retake will not be offered. Unfortunately we have had to use too much class time for retakes and this seems like the best option for those that need to retake a test.

Week 11/23-11/24

Dear Parents,

We're so glad that we're doing so well with what is going on regarding Covid-19.  Please continue to remind your student to wear mask all the time as well as wash hand diligently. Also, we just want to express our appreciation for all your support.  This coming week, we only have two days instruction in school, for the rest of days, enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday with family and stay warm.

 English:
Really was encouraged by student's powerpoint for their country projects. They did a phenomenal job!! I just wanted to encourage students to keep working on math and reading through Percy Jackson. In math they will have a test this upcoming week on Unit 2. It would be great to have them study their Unit 2 Math books this week. Also they will have a vocabulary test this week Tuesday. They took one this Friday and most students did just fine. I am having any student below 90% retake to better their grade!

Chinese:
Thank you for sending your student to school for retaking their science test.  Yea;)  Each one of them are making improvement.
Also, it brought to my attention that some of parent can not see their student's score in skyward.  One of parent wrote to me that in order to see the score, you need to first click on grade book in skyward, then you click the name of subject which will lead you see the grade.  I hope this helps.

This coming Monday, AAPPL test will be administered by computer assistant.  Red class will take AAPPL test 9:15-10:45 and Blue class will take test 11:15-12:45.  How to prepare AAPPL test, have them go to AAPPL demo link and use connect words in their writing "和 and (not connect sentences but connect 还有 and (connect two sentences together), 除了...以外 except,于是 so,一遍又一遍 over and over again,一边...一边...,并且(connect two sentences together),虽然...但是 although...but,本来 originally,可是 but,首先 first,然后 then,接着 then,最后 finally,如果...就 if...just,因为...所以 because...so)
Here is practice link in case your student forget it. https://www.languagetesting.com/aappl2-demo Chinese assignment will post on Monday canvas. Science assignment will post on Monday Canvas.

Week 11/16-11/19

 Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support of your student's education.  The parent teacher Zoom meeting went so well. We really enjoyed seeing all of you and are thankful for all you are doing to help us!

English:

In math this week students are going through ratios and proportions. It is getting harder as we continue through the unit so please remind your students to ask questions in class.

For language arts please remind your students about the powerpoint project. They have been working hard and doing a great job!

Chinese:

Compare 5th grade and 6th grade learning materials, 6th grade has double size amount of reading in Chinese.  There are a lot of new vocabulary to learn.  We have spent a lot of time in class learning to understand those reading materials and new vocabulary meanings.  Also, students spent a lot of time to learn comprehension, speaking, and writing skills. There is very few time to practice vocabulary drill. In order for students to remember and to make progress to next level, it is very important that students taking time practice reading material (Mandarin Matrix) and learned vocabulary through quizlet at home daily. The quizlet 10-15 minutes and Mandarin Matrix 5-10 minutes.  For those students who often mix up with pronunciation between pinyin and alphabet, below is pinyin song link for your student to practice.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WxAYjexZzH_BVyvMoRGGebT2ipsbzYpfGXxEdODIGk0/edit?usp=sharing

English class:

Thank you parents for having students come in today! Both classes took Science and Chinese today. I wanted to mention a few things about the science test for Mrs. McFarland. Due to the fact that I do not have a significant amount of time to teach science, it is vital for students to do the online work week to week on canvas. Our average score on the science test was a failing grade today which means we have to change some things we are doing.

I will work to help review science each Friday and walk students through vocabulary. Please encourage them to take online assignments and study guides seriously as much of the work still has to be done at home. After talking to Mrs. McFarland we will offer a retake this Tuesday for everyone. Please have them study the study guide given in class. It contains all of the material covered so far in science. Also if students do not understand concepts please have them come and meet with me. I am not their main science teacher so I will not know how much they are struggling unless they approach me.

We will work hard to improve how science is taught and hope some of these things will help.

Grades will be given out this upcoming week as we start the new quarter. Please ask questions any time.

Chinese class:

The grade is final for the T1, if you have any concerned or questions, please feel free to contact me.  The science grade already posted on the T2 skyward, please check it.  Although I didn't assign quizlet for assignments, but I will strong suggest students take 10-15 minutes go through the lesson vocabulary and practice it daily.

Week 10/27-10/29

Dear Parents,

Welcome back school!  We hope you all have a relax and wonderful fall break.

English class:

Hope all students have had a great break. As we resume English classes please remind students to ask about their grades. I have them completed and will be posting in skyward soon, but if they would like to change their grade through extra work they will need to reach out to me. So far the students have done really well and I am thankful for their hard work.

In math this week we are continuing our studies on ratios and proportions. We have been working on applying this to real world situations such as statistics and cooking.

For language arts the students a re continuing their study in Percy Jackson. We are also using common core English materials that go with the book to study vocabulary, literary devices and grammar. The students will also begin to work on a powerpoint based on the country they are studying this year.

Along with this I would like to take the time to let you know Mrs. Mcfarland and I's plan for this Thursday and Friday. First on Thursday we will be hosting a zoom from 4-4:30 for any parents that have questions about grading or class. Due to the fact our parent teacher conference time is so tight we would like to offer this as a time for you to ask any questions. There is no requirement to be there, but please come if you have questions.

This Friday we will be having each class come for tests in Chinese and Science. I will be administering the science test and Mrs. Mcfarland will be administering Chinese. Each test will be 45 minutes and we would ask students to be at school by 11:00 this Friday.

Again please reach out with any questions or concerns!

Chinese class:

Students' science grade has posted in the Canvas, please check it.  If your student received a zero for their grade that means student didn't do assignment.  If your student receives low grade, please see the comments.  Since we have flex Friday, students are able to use this time to ask questions and complete homework.  All the homework will be graded, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me.  There is no homework for this week, please use this time wisely to catch up missing assignments.

AAPPL testing:
The AAPPL testing is getting closer.  6th graders will take the practice test on Nov. 17-18th during rotation time, then take real AAPPL test at computer lab on Monday, Nov. 23rd between 9:15-10:45 and 11:15-12:45 for the full test.

For online students in class, they can join in person to take the AAPPL test OR they can take the test at home with parents acting as proctors. If they want to take the test at home, there are instructions for how to request the student be moved from "in person" to "at home" testing.  It takes a few days to change the test mode.  So, students will need to make that request a few days in advance of the test.  Please let me know if your student is not coming to test in person.
